OSTEOARTHRITIS
Osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative disorder of weight bearing joints, commonly (hip and knee).
Two types of OA:
1. Primary OA
2. Secondary OA
Primary OA: Occurs in old age, mainly in weight bearing joints( knee and hip), others joints involved are trapeziometacarpal joint of thumb and distal interphalangeal joints of fingers.
primary OA is more commoner than secondary OA.
Secondary OA: Degeneration is caused by an underlying disease of joint. it may occur at any age and occurs commonly at hip.
causes of secondary OA of the hip:
Avascular necrosis
coxa vara
congenital dislocation of hip(CDH)
Mal united fracture
Fractures of acetabulum
Clinical features:
pain
crepitus
swelling
stiffness
muscle spasm
contracture
locking of joint
Investigations :
Xray
Treatment:
Drugs
chondroprotective agents(repair of damaged cartilage)
Supportive therapy( weight reduction, local heat, exercises)
surgery
joint replacement
